Why it works

six reasons makers use Industrial Clear epoxy resin on woodworking

  1. Bring Out the Beauty of Wood

Every piece of wood has its own history. Industrial Clear enhances the natural grain, color and depth, allowing the unique details of your material to shine.

  2. Helps Solve Natural Wood Challenges

Wood is beautiful because it’s unique, but natural features like knots, wormholes, cracks and voids can make finishing a project more challenging. Industrial Clear helps fill and stabilize these areas, turning them into a design feature while preserving the wood’s character.

  3. More Than Just a Coating

Industrial Clear is part of the creative process. Once fully cured, it can be cut, drilled, sanded, carved, shaped, and turned alongside wood, making it ideal for hybrid projects that combine resin and natural materials.

  4. Made for Big Builds and Small Details

From large-scale builds like live-edge tables and desks to detailed creations like bowls, pen blanks and custom accessories, Industrial Clear gives woodworkers the flexibility to take on projects of all sizes.

  5. A Finish That Shows Your Work

You put the time into every detail. Industrial Clear self-levels as it cures, helping create a smooth, even surface that highlights your craftsmanship and keeps the focus on your finished piece.

  6. A Safer Choice From Start to Finish

Industrial Clear has a low odor and is formulated without solvents or VOCs, making time in the workshop more comfortable. Once fully cured, it’s food-safe and can be used for projects like dining tables and serving boards where food may come into contact with the surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cut, drill or turn Industrial Clear once it cures?

Yes. Once Industrial Clear reaches its full cure after 7 days, it can be cut, drilled, sanded, shaped, carved and turned using standard woodworking tools. Its Shore D hardness rating of 83 allows it to machine cleanly when paired with sharp tools, so it’s a great choice for hybrid wood-and-resin projects like bowls, pen blanks, charcuterie boards, signs and other custom creations.

How should I prepare wood before applying epoxy?

Proper wood preparation is key to getting the best results. Start with clean, dry wood that’s free from dirt, debris, loose bark, oils and waxes. Moisture trapped inside the wood can lead to adhesion issues, a cloudy or uneven cure, expansion and contraction, and potential cracking over time.

For best results, use properly dried wood from a reliable supplier. If drying your own wood, a moisture meter is a helpful tool - aim for a moisture reading of 12% or less, depending on the type of wood.

Before pouring, apply a seal coat of Industrial Clear to help prevent air bubbles and reduce epoxy absorption. Porous wood can release trapped air or soak up resin, so sealing the surface first helps create a smoother final pour.

Will epoxy change the color of my wood?

Yes, epoxy can change the appearance of wood. In many cases, it enhances the natural grain and depth, but some species may become darker once coated.

Before starting your project, test a small area or sample piece to see how the wood reacts. If the wood darkens more than you’d like, applying a clear-drying wood sealant before epoxy can help preserve the original look.

How do I fill knots, cracks and voids with Industrial Clear?

Before filling knots, cracks, or voids, secure the underside of the wood to prevent epoxy from leaking through. Sheathing tape or a piece of acetate can be used to create a temporary barrier over openings.

Make sure the wood is level before pouring and remove any loose pieces of wood or bark that could break free during the pour. For deeper voids, multiple pours may be needed to fully fill the space.

How do I prevent bubbles when pouring epoxy over wood?

Wood naturally contains tiny air pockets that can release bubbles into wet epoxy. Applying a thin seal coat of Industrial Clear first helps seal the surface, reducing air release and preventing the wood from absorbing too much epoxy during the flood coat.

For best results, apply the next layer while the seal coat is still tacky, or if the seal coat has fully cured, lightly sand the surface before pouring the next layer. For deeper projects, multiple pours may be needed to help reduce bubbles and manage heat build up during curing.

Can I use wood stains or oils underneath Industrial Clear?

Yes, but proper preparation is important. Water-based and alcohol-based stains should be fully dry before applying epoxy. Oil-based stains and grain fillers need extra time to cure completely, as leftover oils or solvents can interfere with adhesion.
